X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) Detector

X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) detectors are a form of Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (AES) that involves aiming high energy X-rays at the surface of the sample to be analysed. The interaction of these X-rays with the object causes secondary (fluorescent) X-rays to be emitted. Each element present produces X-rays with different energies and these can be detected and displayed as a spectrum of intensity against energy. The position of the peaks identify which elements are present, and the peak heights identify how much of each element is present. This technique is commonly used in industries such as mining and mineral exploration, cement, ceramics, and glass.
