APMelt™ - LEAM™

The APMelt - LEAM™ -process (Low Emission Aluminium Melting) is a joint development by the Stockach metal goods factory and Air Products.

The APMelt™-LEAM™ process gives precise control of the melting process and minimises emissions of total carbon, nitrogen oxides, dioxins and furans

The problem of carbon emissions when melting aluminium scrap chiefly arises from the presence of paints and plastics in the scrap. With the APmelt™-LEAM® process the oxy-fuel burner is on the exhaust side of the furnace. All the flue gas flows through the burner flame, which therefore acts as an after burner. All the energy in the charge is available for combustion, so fuel costs can be up to 20% lower than for a conventional furnace.

Sensors detect unburned hydrocarbon residues in the exhaust and are used to control the fuel/oxygen to ensure complete combustion.

Seals between the furnace door and the rotating body of the furnace minimise the harmful effects of secondary air leakage.
